French 75 is a cocktail made from gin, champagne, lemon juice, and sugar. It is also called a 75 Cocktail. In French it is known as a Soixante Quinze.

French 75 Cocktail

The French 75 dates back to World War I, named after the French 75mm field gun, known for its kick. An early form of this drink was created in 1915 at the New York Bar in Paris—later Harry’s New York Bar—by barman Harry MacElhone. It’s a cocktail that is popular nowadays to order in a bar.

➡️ Tips and Substitutions:

  • There is a variation of the French 75 that uses cognac instead of gin, which is known as a “French 75 à la française” or “Soixante Quinze.”
  • It doesn’t really matter if you use champagne or Prosecco- both work in this cocktail. Just use one that you enjoy!
  • Be sure to use freshly squeezed lemon juice and good quality gin for the best flavor.

❤️ What I Love About This Recipe:

  1. I love that there’s a celebratory quality to this sparkling cocktail. It can be served as an alternative to champagne!
  2. It’s a good excuse to get out my champagne glasses.

Here’s a recipe for a Copycat Wendy’s Strawberry Frosty. This is the strawberry frosty that everyone loves from Wendy’s fast food restaurant.

Copycat Wendy’s Strawberry Frosty

Surely you’ve had a Wendy’s frosty, right? It’s thick and creamy and wonderful. I’m not much of a fast-food restaurant kind of gal, but their strawberry frosty draws you in and has you wanting more. Every once in a while, I’ll stop by Wendy’s just to grab a frosty. But now I have a copycat recipe you can make at home!

🛒 Ingredients Needed:

  • strawberry milk
  • Cool Whip
  • whole milk
  • sweetened condensed milk
ice cube tray of strawberry milk

✏️ How to make a Wendy’s Strawberry Frosty:

*The complete, printable recipe is in the recipe card at the end of this post.

Pour strawberry milk into ice cube trays; freeze until solid, at least 4 hours and up to 24 hours.

In a food processor, process frozen milk cubes, Cool Whip, milk and sweetened condensed milk until smooth.

➡️ Tips and Substitutions:

  • Whole milk will turn out a frosty that is more rich and creamy, but you can sub nonfat milk if you want to lighten things up.
  • Use vanilla almond milk to make a vanilla frosty.
  • Substitute eggnog for the strawberry milk to create an eggnog frosty.
  • Add a little strawberry syrup or fresh strawberries to strengthen the strawberry flavor.

Pour into ice cream glasses and drink with a straw!

✔️ Is a Wendy’s frosty a milkshake or ice cream?

Neither! That is why it is one of the most iconic frozen desserts. It has a creamy texture that’s thicker than a milkshake but not as firm as traditional scooped ice cream.

❤️ What I Love About This Recipe:

  1. It’s a great sub for the Wendy’s frosty!
  2. If I make a frosty at home, I’m less likely to pick up a burger and fries!
  3. It’s quite a delicious treat.

This Fig Old Fashioned is a twist on the classic old-fashioned cocktail with fig jam and fresh fig incorporated into the drink!

fig old fashioned in a cocktail glass

Fig Old Fashioned

An old fashioned is a pretty delicious cocktail to make for happy hour, and it’s also a good one to order at a higher end bar. This fig old fashioned is the type of craft cocktail that you might find on the menu at one of those high end bars. But it’s super easy to make at home too!

brilliant bites cookbook cover

This recipe comes from the latest cookbook by my good friend Maegan Brown: Brilliant Bites: 75 Amazing Small Bites for Any Occasion. Maegan is queen of easy recipes, and this book is another great one. It’s full of recipes for party bites, holiday bites, breakfast bites, snack bites, dessert bites and savvy sips. There are a ton of awesome ideas in this book for bites to serve at a party! I’m such a fan of old-fashioned cocktails, so I had to choose the fig old-fashioned to make. But the bites in the book are the star of the show!

Here are some bites I can’t wait to make!

  • Cacio e Pepe Bites
  • Mini Manicotti Bites
  • Patriotic Pie Bites
  • Monster Cookie Balls
  • Apple Fritter Bites
  • PB&J Stuffed Dates
  • Apple Pie Bites

  • ice (use a large ice cube from an ice cube tray like this)
  • fig jam
  • freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • bourbon
  • Cointreau
  • sparkling water
  • fresh fig

✏️ How to make a Fig Old Fashioned:

*The complete, printable recipe is in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  1. To a rocks glass, add a large ice cube that fits the glass.
  2. To a cocktail shaker, add the fig jam and lemon juice and stir until well-incorporated.
  3. Add the bourbon, Cointreau and some ice, and shake until well-chilled.
  4. Double strain into the rocks glass, add the sparkling water and stir to incorporate.
  5. Garnish with the fig slice, and serve!

➡️ Recipe Tips:

  • Be sure to use freshly squeezed lemon juice. It will make a big difference over using store-bought lemon juice.
  • My favorite bourbon to use for an old-fashioned cocktail is either Bulleit or Four Roses. You can use whatever appeals to you.
  • You may use club soda in place of sparkling water, if you’d like.
  • Fig jam can usually be found in the deli section of your market (where the more gourmet items are displayed). Use leftovers to make my baked brie with fig jam.
  • Don’t use dried figs for this recipe.
  • If you’re making this cocktail, and you don’t have access to fresh figs, use a lemon slice as a garnish instead.

What’s the best time to find fresh figs?

Fig season is typically July through October. But I’ve had success finding them in the more gourmet markets through December.

❤️ Why I Love This Recipe

  1. It’s a delicious twist on the classic old fashioned cocktail.
  2. The fig jam adds a good amount of sweetness, so no sugar or simple syrup is needed.
  3. It’s a gourmet cocktail you can make at home!

A Whiskey Sour is a great whiskey cocktail recipe with citrus and and sweetener added.

whiskey sour in a cocktail glass with garnishes

Whiskey Sour

The first mention of a Whiskey Sour cocktail was in a Wisconsin newspaper way back in 1870. It’s referred to as “sour” because of the citrus added to the cocktail. Sometimes there is a dash of egg white added in, but this recipe does not include an egg white. The Millionaire’s Lemonade cocktail is another recipe that you might enjoy if you are a whiskey lover!

Divide the Whiskey Sour cocktails between two ice-filled rocks glasses. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.

➡️ Recipe Tips and Substitutions:

  • Use either bourbon or whiskey for this recipe.
  • Take the time to freshly squeeze the lemon and lime juice for this cocktail instead of using store-bought juices.
  • You can certainly use simple syrup (or another kind of sweetener such as honey) for this recipe.
  • We love to use the Luxardo brand gourmet cherries, but maraschino cherries may be used too.

★ What’s the difference between Bourbon and Whiskey?

From Dictionary.com: Whiskey is a general term for an alcoholic liquor made from fermented mashed grains. Bourbon is the term for a whiskey made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn. Bourbon was traditionally made in Bourbon County, Kentucky, and most bourbon is still produced in the state of Kentucky.

❤️ Why I love this recipe:

  1. I love a good Old Fashioned, but I love the sweet and sour aspect of this whiskey cocktail.
  2. The Whiskey Sour is a popular drink to order at a bar that is easy to make at home.
  3. The flavors of this cocktail balance out the bite of bourbon.

These Old Town Margaritas are a nod to San Diego’s Old Town area. Old Town is a hotspot of the best Mexican food and margaritas in town.  These are the best margaritas!

Back in the late 80’s, I was in college at San Diego State University. It wasn’t that expensive to go to college at that time, and my Mom and Dad paid my tuition. The fun stuff and entertainment money was up to me. I always had a couple of jobs bringing in some extra cash. A favorite outing in college was to go to Old Town for the best Mexican food. It wasn’t a cheap outing, by any means, because we had to have margaritas with our Mexican food. So I always saved my pennies for our ventures into Old Town!

This is a delicious margarita recipe that was published in the California Sol Food cookbook (San Diego’s Junior League cookbook). Be sure to multiply the recipe and make lots of the simple syrup ahead of time as these will go quickly at your party!

MAKE THE SIMPLE SYRUP:

Heat the sugar and water in a saucepan until it reaches a syrupy consistency, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let stand (or refrigerate) until cool. I suggest making the simple syrup a full day ahead so it has time to chill.

PREPARE THE MARGARITAS:

In a blender, combine syrup, tequila, lime juice, liqueur and water with ice. Process until the desired consistency. Pour into salt-rimmed margarita glasses and garnish with lime slices. Enjoy!

I’m definitely not Irish. I’m mostly a Swedish girl at heart- big bones, big appetite, a bit on the stubborn side, and many distant relatives in Minnesota. My husband is very Irish though, and when St. Paddy’s Day rolls around… he’s always hoping I’ll whip up some special “Irish” things. I couldn’t resist mixing this up for my husband after a tip from Benjamin Steakhouse on seasonal cocktails.

And there it is! The festive Irish Mojito! My husband and I both love it. It’s much like a regular mojito with a little bit more of an added mint element to it. And I absolutely love its festive look. It’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day! Enjoy!

Making punch is among the easy recipes on my website. You don’t even know how to cook to make punch, so that’s good news for those people who don’t have much experience in the kitchen! I love to include a punch bowl at a party. People can help themselves during the party, and you don’t have to worry about serving anyone. There are easy instructions for turning this into a cocktail punch included further down in this post.

Add citrus slices as a garnish in your punch bowl. Just slice up whatever citrus you’re using- oranges and limes. You can include some fresh cranberries too, if you’re making this a festive holiday punch.

Tips for Changing Things Up:

Add a little ginger ale or club soda to stretch out the punch and make it less potent with the sugary juices. Add grapefruit juice too if you’d like to include all the citrus!

If you would like to turn this into a snappy brunch cocktail, add 2 cups of vodka or rum. It’s hard to pinpoint the number of ounces of alcohol you’ll need. Perhaps just add a little alcohol and then taste to make sure it’s as strong as you’d like it to be!

You can also try my champagne mimosa punch, which is a delicious champagne brunch punch! Enjoy!

  • 24 ounces sparkling water
  • garnishes (swizzle stick of cranberries and rosemary)

Instructions

MAKE THE CRANBERRY SYRUP:

  • In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the cranberries, sugar, water and a cinnamon stick to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes, breaking the cranberries apart with a wooden spoon as they cook. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool to room temperature. Strain the syrup into a bowl, discarding the cranberries and cinnamon stick.

ASSEMBLE THE COCKTAILS:

  • In a medium bowl, stir together the gin, cranberry syrup and the raspberry liqueur. Add the sparkling water, stir gently and pour into four lowball glasses. Ok to pour over a little bit of ice or one fancy cube.

This Spiked Eggnog is a delicious and decadent cocktail to serve during the holiday season.

During the holiday season, is there anything more festive than eggnog? Whether you are using homemade eggnog or store-bought eggnog, this spiked eggnog recipe is a must try.

You’ve probably seen the eggnog in the liqueur section of your market that is already spiked with booze. Don’t buy that. It’s not great! The way I’m showing you how to make spiked eggnog will make it taste great. It’s super easy to do. Even though it seems fancy, this eggnog cocktail is fairly simple. In fact, all you need is a few ingredients and you are ready to get into the holiday spirit!

ingredients displayed for making spiked eggnog

Ingredients needed:

  • brandy
  • dark rum
  • brown sugar
  • instant espresso powder
  • eggnog
  • heavy whipping cream
  • powdered sugar
  • vanilla extract
  • ground nutmeg

While you can make your own eggnog, I prefer to use store bought. Not only can you buy extra creamy eggnog, but I find it more cost effective. The additional cost of having to gather all of the extra ingredients simply isn’t worth it to me.

How to make Spiked Eggnog:

The complete, printable recipe is at the end of this post.

MAKE THE EGGNOG BASE:

  • In a pitcher, stir the first four ingredients together until the sugar and espresso are dissolved. Stir in the eggnog. Cover and refrigerate. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead)

MAKE THE TOPPING:

  • In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the cream, powdered sugar and vanilla together to soft peaks.
  • Pour the eggnog into punch cups. Top with a dollop of cream, sprinkle with nutmeg and serve.

We add cinnamon sticks as a garnish. That’s totally optional, but they look pretty cute and they’ll impart a small amount of cinnamon flavor into the eggnog!

FAQ’s for spiked eggnog

This drink is so festive and fun! Your guests will be begging you to make them for years to come. Here are a few questions to help you make the best spiked eggnog around:

What are soft peaks?

For a large group, I take a large bowl and mix it with a hand mixer to beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract at medium speed into stiff peaks.

Stiff peaks are when you beat a mixture so much that it is able to stand straight up on its own. This should only take a few minutes and not as complicated as it sounds- I promise!

Because this is a fun way to top the drink, think of it as a whipped cream for your guests to enjoy.

How far in advance should I make the eggnog mixture?

The base of this drink is (of course) the delicious eggnog base. Since I usually take this drink for a big group, the mixture is stored in a pitcher so we have plenty to go around.

I like to take the brandy, dark rum, brown sugar and espresso in a large mixing bowl until the powder has dissolved then add in the eggnog.

Personally, I will try to do this 24 hours before the party so the eggnog base has time to marinate. You can also do it right before serving, the flavors just won’t be as immersed.

If I am making a single spiked eggnog drink, I always prefer to use a cocktail shaker to make cleaning up easier. I just add the ingredients there, shake and serve!

How do I make this drink fancier for the holidays?

For the holidays, I make this drink a lot. Just about any party that I attend will have these drinks for everyone to enjoy! Here’s how I step up my game to make these drinks even fancier.

I pour the drink into martini glasses with either a cinnamon stick at the top or a cinnamon/sugar blend. This is made by mixing a tablespoon of ground cinnamon with one cup of sugar. Their are great ways to make this delicious

Is there an eggnog alternative?

While choosing to use something other than eggnog will reduce some of the flavor, there are other options for your guests that do not include eggnog.

You can substitute your eggnog for 1 cup milk, just heat it up in a large saucepan so that you can serve the drink with hot milk.

Why use Instant Espresso Powder?

Instant espresso powder is delicious when added to this spiked eggnog. Use leftover espresso powder to make things like cookies, brownies and cakes. The espresso really intensifies the flavor of chocolate in baking recipes. You can locate instant espresso powder in your market near the instant coffee. If you would like to use instant coffee instead, that’s okay too. And honestly… if you’re not into coffee, you can leave out the espresso/coffee entirely. Your spiked eggnog will still be amazing!

These Pomegranate Mojitos are a refreshing and festive drink for a fall party or happy hour. I’m all about celebrating the seasons, and mojitos really hit the spot! They’re a fun drink for the winter holiday season too, if you add a few pom seeds to float around festively in the drink.

The complete, printable recipe is at the end of this post.

In a cocktail shaker or tall glass, combine the sugar, lime juice, and mint leaves; mash the leaves with a muddler or a wooden spoon. Stir in the rum and pomegranate juice.

Fill two glasses with ice. Divide the mixed mojitos between the two glasses. Top with a splash of club soda.

Garnish with an additional mint leaf. Enjoy!

You might want to double or triple the recipe because nobody is only going to want just one pomegranate mojito!

Recipe notes:

  1. Pom juice can be expensive, but you only need a small bottle for these (unless you plow through a whole bunch of drinks!!) Pom juice can be found in the fresh juice section of your market.
  2. Sugar added to cocktail is easiest to dissolve if it’s “superfine” sugar. It can be found in the baking aisle of your market. Alternately, you can use simple syrup.
  3. It makes a difference to use white rum vs. gold rum.
  4. Another option is to serve these pomegranate mojitos in martini glasses with just an ice cube or two instead of in tall glasses.
